Animal Health

Common Ailments of Zoo Animals :

In general, the disease pattern and treatments of zoo animals are similar to those of pets & domesticated animals. Commonly encountered medical problems include localized (abscess or cellulitis), systemic bacterial & viral infections, parasitic infestations and traumatic injuries (bite or gore wounds, lacerations, fractures, luxations), lameness, arthritis and gastro-intestinal foreign bodies. The same diagnostic and therapeutic principles of management of these disorders in human and domestic animals is successfully applied to the care of affected zoo animals.
Because of excellent hygiene, sanitation, managemental practices and prophylactic measures, husbandry, nutrition and veterinary care, most of the zoo animals live to advanced ages.
